Nielson Report Reveals Interesting UK Bingo Info

A recent report has revealed that the UK online gaming industry is doing quite well despite the recession and volatile market conditions. The report by Nielson Media Research said that between July 2009 and July 2010 the number of lottery, casino, poker, and bingo players increased by 40%. The Nielson Group is the same famous company that does media research for television networks, radio and other media and is one of the oldest and most respected research groups in the world. The Nielson group has also branched out into online research and follows the online trends of various industries.

The report said that the online gaming industry in the United Kingdom has expanded at a faster rate than Facebook the world’s largest social networking site. Nielson says that in just one year the online gaming industry in the UK has attracted about 3.2 million new players. The National Lottery has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of this influx of new players and Camelot Group who operate the lottery has seen an 88% increase in the number of online lottery users. According to the report online bingo sites continue to attract new players throughout the UK.

Nielson reports that about 50% of all online gamblers have incomes of £30,000 ($46,871.62 USD) a year or more and 46% of all online gamblers are women. Undoubtedly online bingo accounts for a large number of female gamblers online. There are more than 2,000 gaming sites serving the UK gambling market and include casinos, online bingo and poker sites. The report found that many specifically targeted female players and used “female friendly” colors to appeal to female online players.  Neil Beston of Nielsen Media pointed out that changing demographics are changing the online gaming industry in the UK and stated; “The over-65s and those on lower household incomes have historically been heavy users of gambling sites, but in the face of the recession this profile is changing. While the phenomenal growth in gambling sites over the last two years has been driven by men and women of all ages, it appears to be powered particularly by middle-aged men, the well-educated and high-earning households.”

GamCare which provides information and support for problem gamblers in the UK expressed concern about the increase in the number of online gamblers. Most gaming sites use software to identify problem gamblers and is should be pointed out that problem gambling among people who play online bingo is extremely low. It looks like online gambling is one of the few growth industries in the UK.
