Survey Claims Most Bingo Players Moving Online

A recent survey taken by Virgin bingo claims that 69% of the players surveyed replaced traditional live games at bingo halls with online games at bingo sites. The survey also examined the social life of players and friendships between players. Many are skeptical of the survey’s results because only online bingo players were surveyed. Bingo news reposted that recently many live bingo clubs have reported a surge in the number of players attending games. In fact, one major bingo operator in the UK plans to spend millions revamping several bingo halls.

647 players were surveyed and the numbers revealed that 44% of all players surveyed said they had formed genuine friendships while playing bingo at bingo sites. About 185 said they had met with online friends in person. This is not unusual and a few bingo sites have held events where online friends could meet in person. In addition to online friendships romance has blossomed at some bingo sites and there have actually been a few marriage proposals at some bingo sites. A few years ago one bingo site offered to pay for the wedding of two players that had met in chat rooms but the church refused to hold an event sponsored by a ‘gambling’ company.

22% of the players surveyed said they had discussed personal problems and family issues with other players and 34% said that playing internet bingo had improved their social life. 69% of all players surveyed said they had replaced live bingo games with online bingo. The head of customer relationship management Alan Thomas stated “When we put out this survey we really had no idea what to expect. We are genuinely thrilled that our customers get more than a bit of fun out of playing at Virgin Bingo – it seems a number of them have truly enriched their social lives through new friendships – and in one case a wedding! There is a lot of focus on the negative impact of online gaming, I think this demonstrates for a lot of people it provides a point of common interest and can bring something to people’s lives.”

The survey revealed many interesting points of view. One player who is taking care of a disabled spouse said that online bingo has helped her to cope with personal problems and to engage in much needed social activity. The unnamed player stated “Since I became completely dependent on family for outdoor transport (plus my husband needs 24 hour care he has Alzheimer’s disease) my life has taken on new meaning through my bingo friends. If I need to talk, whatever time of day or night, there is always someone there either online, Facebook or phone so I am in contact 24/7. Even with family close by they find it difficult to provide the conversation I need, and there is no communication with my husband – so my bingo friends provide that link. I could not survive if I couldn’t have a moan and a groan and of course the laughs. Then of course there is bingo itself – I used to go to landline clubs several times a week – now I log on and play whenever I want with the chance of winning some serious money (which I have a couple of times I’m pleased to say).” As can be seen bingo sites provide a much needed outlet for socialization in addition to entertaining online bingo games.
