Survey Reveals Unique Attitudes About Luck

William Hill is one of the oldest bookmakers in the UK. Founded in 1934 by William Hill the firm grew into one of the largest bookmakers in the UK and the firm has branched out into other operations such as online bingo. Earlier this year William Hill commissioned a survey to find out British attitudes about luck. The survey came up with some very surprising results. The survey showed that 69% of all UK residents believe that luck exists and 31% say that there is no such thing as luck. The survey was released at the same time as Hill’s new online bingo promotion; ‘Win-A-Car-A-Day in October.’ The survey tracked beliefs in luck be region. In Northern Ireland a large majority, 62.5% believed in the ‘luck of the Irish.’ In contrast only 29% of residents in Scotland believe that there is such a thing as luck. That may be why Scots have a reputation for thrift.

People from the North West, North East, Yorkshire, and the Midlands have a negative attitude about luck. In contrast people in Wales, London the eastern region of the UK believe that they are lucky. Nationwide Britons seem to be superstitious with a majority believing in some sort of superstition. 57.5% of all UK residents said that they believed in a number of superstitions. The survey revealed that 39.8% of the UK population will not walk under a ladder, 30% said they would not tell anyone their birthday wish after blowing out the candles on their birthday cake. Even stranger 8.7% said they would bring a lucky charm or talisman to an exam or important interview. 0.8% admitted to carrying a lucky rabbit’s foot in their pocket.

Commenting on the results of the survey TV presenter Kate Thornton stated “I was shocked to see the Scots believe they aren’t lucky. I think I’ll have to have a chat to Andy Murray before next year’s Wimbledon. As for the Irish – everyone knows they are the luckiest people in the world. I was also amazed to see 0.8% of the population would walk around with a rabbit’s foot in their pocket for good luck – are they mad?”  Other survey results say that most people believe 7 is a lucky number in the UK. 65% of those with white hair believe that they are lucky and 47% believe that being nice to their neighbors will bring them luck. The survey revealed some very interesting attitudes about luck. Speaking of luck 96% of all online bingo players say that they have won a jackpot at least once.
