Florida Seniors Protest Bingo Ban

Florida Seniors Protest Bingo BanMany people view seniors as quiet and retiring. In most cases that is true until you try to ban bingo games! In Florida a fight is brewing over a trailer park’s decision to ban bingo. So who would want to deny seniors their bingo games? The answer is easy; professional busybodies and bluenoses. Trailer Estates in Manatee County is classified as a park and recreation district. Because of that designation the bluenoses say there should be no ‘gambling.’ The proposed ban led to heated discussions at the community’s board meeting. Bluenose Bev Lew told reporters “I take issue with them spending government money to gamble. I don’t want us to have a line item budget for 36/40 bingo, 50/50, or Vegas Night. It’s illegal for a government to use your tax money to gamble with, and when you gamble with tax money, you put us in danger of losing our community property.”

Bingo player Gary Leboeuf offered a note of sanity and told reporters “They want to stop people from playing bingo. Everything this park does is very negative on their part. They love harassment…they get up in the morning with hatred on their mind. What they want to do is treat us like we’re criminals, like we’re breaking the law every day and we’re not.” The ban got some seniors so upset that dozens of them staged a demonstration to protest the restrictions on bingo games. Seniors held signs that read “Bingo IS Legal,” “Let Our Seniors Play Bingo,” and “This IS Elder Abuse.”

Residents said they were told by park officials that the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office threatened to shut down the bingo games because they were ‘gambling.’ Don’t they have any real criminals to catch? After some discussion bingo players were told they could hold the games but winners would get prizes instead of small amounts of cash. The Florida bingo ban is eerily similar to another bingo ban that took place in Bald Knob Arkansas in 2012. Things really got weird in Bald Knob after religious extremists led by a demented ‘pastor’ declared all-out war on bingo games at the town’s senior center.

Local bluenoses in Bald Knob lobbied the town’s council to ban the bingo games. For many seniors the games were the only opportunity to socialize with friends but that didn’t deter the bingo battlers. A tiny number of senior center regulars intent on foisting their beliefs onto other complained and stopped attending events. Unfortunately the extremists and nutjobs got their way and bingo was banned by the council. Seniors should investigate online bingo games. They can play from the privacy of their own homes free from the prying eyes of bluenoses and busybodies!

Alabama AG Still Pursuing Bingo Vendetta

Alabama AG Still Pursuing Bingo Vendetta

Alabama AG Still Pursuing Bingo VendettaThe latest anti-bingo campaign by Alabama attorney general Luther Strange has sparked the ire of a majority of Alabama citizens who are wondering why their attorney general is wasting time and millions of taxpayer dollars fighting electronic bingo. In a one two punch on February 20th Strange ordered a raid at VictoryLand casino and filed a lawsuit against the Poarch Band of Creek Indians saying tribal gaming is a “public nuisance.” The raid put hundreds of casino employees out of work in an area with few job opportunities. No expression of concern for these people was forthcoming from Strange’s office.

In an astonishing betrayal of one of his largest campaign contributors Strange filed a lawsuit that experts have already called “frivolous” against the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. Records reveal that the tribe has donated about $100,000 to Strange’s political campaigns along with tribal gaming interests in Mississippi. Some legislators have spoken out against the raid at VictoryLand. State Senator Billy Beasley, D-Clayton, who represents Macon County where VictoryLand is located stated “I understand over 300 folks at VictoryLand who have been employed for about two and a half months have now lost their jobs in a state where all we continue to talk about is we need more jobs. The folks that played bingo there last night, guess where they’re going to play bingo tonight? They’re just going to ride across the county line and go to Elmore County or Montgomery County. They’re going to play bingo at the Poarch Indians casino.”

Beasley also criticized the methods used to obtain a search warrant for VictoryLand.  Beasley stated “This is unprecedented in the state of Alabama, for the Supreme Court to issue a search warrant.” Senator Bobby Singleton, D-Greensboro, chairman of the Legislative Black Caucus, also criticized the process used by Strange and said “We think the precedent set by this attorney general and this Supreme Court is wrong. It’s a bad precedent to set.” Singleton added “Who are we following? The protection of people is really at bay now. Who do you appeal to? If the Supreme Court is issuing it, who do you appeal to?”

Many Alabama citizens object to the waste of taxpayer dollars and say Strange’s irrational vendetta against bingo has made the state a national laughingstock. Strange has backed many far right causes and is trying to get the state legislature to make the victimless ‘crime’ of gambling a felony. Strange proposed the same thing last year but was rejected by lawmakers. In addition to Strange the legislature also heard from right wing extremist Judge Roy Moore who gained national attention from his contempt for the separation of church and state.

Bingo lovers in Alabama have a quick remedy at their fingertips; online bingo. There are several online bingo sites accepting American players including those from Alabama. Online bingo players in Alabama can play from the comfort and privacy of their own homes free from the prying eyes of Luther Strange and his fellow bluenoses.

Online Bingo and the IRS

Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States famously said “In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death, and taxes.” Anyone that has ever had the misfortune to run afoul of the IRS can confirm Franklin’s sentiments. Gamblers are especially vulnerable and most are not familiar with the fact that all gambling winnings are subject to taxation. In 2008 Miami Florida residents John Ricone and Francys Tolon-Ricone went to play bingo at Miccosukee Resort & Gaming Indian casino. The couple was lucky and won $5,500.

When the Ricones cashed out the casino deducted $1,500 out of their winnings for taxes. The Ricones were under the impression that they had fulfilled their obligations to the IRS when that got a very nasty surprise. When they filed their taxes for 2008 they learned, much to their horror that the tribal casino had failed to remit the $1,500 they had deducted to the IRS. The IRS told the couple they are responsible for paying the $1,000 plus interest. The Ricones are suing the casino and many are wondering if the casino is ripping off other players.

According to their lawsuit the Ricones won $2,961.66 in February 2008 and the tribe deducted $829.26 for federal income taxes. During another trip in July the couple won $2,500 and the tribe deducted $700. In 2010 the IRS told the Ricones that they owed $1,621 with interest because the tribe never remitted the money to the IRS. Tax troubles are nothing new for the Micosukees. Over 100 tribal members owe the IRS a total of $26 million in unpaid taxes. Billy Cypress, the former tribal chairman owes almost $3 million from after using Miccosukee credit cards to go on a three year spending spree. The tribe is fighting with the IRS and is claiming “sovereignty.” The tribe is also suing their former attorneys Dexter Lehtinen and Guy Lewis. The tribe claims that both lawyers told the tribe they did not have to pay federal taxes.

There are many misconceptions surrounding gambling and taxes. All winnings are taxable even for innocuous games such as internet bingo. In fact all income is taxable and the United States tax code says that gross income is “all income from whatever source derived.” When dealing with the IRS honesty is usually the best policy and trying to deceive the taxman can be very costly.

Double Down Adds Bingo Games

International Game Technology has added bingo to the company’s Double Down casino on Facebook. IGT’s casino features a variety of casino style games. Currently DoubleDown Casino is the most popular social gaming application on the social networking site and has 5.2 million active monthly users. The addition of online bingo is expected to increase the user base for the casino. In Double Down’s new bingo game players are offered up to 12 carded plays per round. Other bingo sites are only offering four carded plays.

Players can customize their daubers and play games in themed bingo rooms. The bingo games offer three themed rooms titled Art Deco, Fashionista and High Orbit and others may be added later. The games offer speed controls to make the games accessible for different skill sets and players have the option to mark their cards manually or use the auto daub feature. Since the games are free they are a great place for those interested in learning the online version of the game.

Although the Facebook games are free IGT is expected to generate income from advertisements and the in-game sale of virtual goods sold in exchange for virtual currency. These are known as micro transactions. IGT’s DoubleDown Casino is linking the games to several brick and mortar casinos. Recently IGT made a deal with the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Last month IGT made a deal with Jacobs Entertainment. The popularity of the DoubleDown application is expected to enable IGT to generate revenue in the long run.

At nasdaq.com there is enthusiasm for the new IGT Facebook bingo game. A recent article stated “We believe that IGT stands to benefit significantly from the massive growth potential of social and mobile games over the long term. According to market research firm BI Intelligence, the U.S. social gaming market (including mobile games) is expected to more than double from approximately $2.0 billion in 2011 to approximately $5.5 billion by 2015.” The author also says that although IGT is a new player in the social gaming market the company’s strong game portfolio and large customer base will help the company to form strong partnerships that will give the company a competitive edge.

There are several bingo applications on Facebook including Zynga’s version of the game. It remains to be seen who will come out on top of the social bingo market.

Bingo Hall Etiquette For Beginners

Bingo Hall Etiquette For Beginners

Most online bingo players are aware of the etiquette that is expected at online bingo chat rooms. Common sense rules apply, no swearing, no soliciting, no promoting other sites and so on. At land based bingo halls the rules are somewhat different. Here is what the online bingo player can expect at a live brick and mortar bingo hall. Like any social situation there are rules of etiquette that apply.

Players must be 18 years old or older. Younger players trying to sneak in disrupt the operation of the games for everyone. If alcohol is served on the premises players must be over 21. Underage players trying to purchase alcoholic beverages will usually be kicked out which is never a pleasant experience.

A decade ago smoking was perfectly acceptable at most bingo halls. A 2006 survey of bingo players in Great Britain showed that about 63% of all players were smokers. Times have changed and in the UK a national smoking ban is in place and is strictly enforced. In the United States individual states and communities have their own smoking laws and ordinances. Players that cannot sit through a game session without a smoke should probably stick to online bingo. Times have changed and attitudes towards smoking have changed with the times.

Players should come prepared to play bingo! Bingo halls are not free entertainment although they do contain some colorful characters. Most live bingo halls take a dim view of those who come to watch the games without participating.

After winning a huge bingo jackpot it can be hard to contain the excitement that goes along with a big win. At most bingo halls excessive celebrations are frowned upon. Players should remember that every time they win a game there is a roomful of people who didn’t win.

At most bingo halls’ bringing in outside food and drinks is prohibited. Bingo halls make a good part of their income selling food and drinks. There are some bingo halls that allow players to bring in food. At some charity bingo games food and drinks may not be available and it is acceptable for players to bring their own. At most bingo halls bringing in alcoholic beverages is prohibited.

People go to bingo halls to socialize and have a good time. Bingo halls are not the same as online bingo sites where players are encouraged to participate in the chat rooms. Talking during a game if frowned on at most bingo halls and in some cases may cause a player to be expelled. Talking during games can keep other players from hearing the numbers as they are called.

As can be seen the etiquette at most bingo halls is based on common courtesy and mutual respect for the rights of other players.

Is Online Bingo Hurting the Economy ?

Since the global recession hit employers are demanding more productivity from workers. In the United States workers are working longer hours for less money and leisure time has been cut to a minimum. It is imperative that corporations get the most value and effort from their employees. Because of long workdays and stress some employees will take unauthorized breaks whenever they can get away with it. Sitting in a cubicle for hours in front of a computer screen can be boring at times and some employees surf the internet or play games on their computers and smart phones as a way to relieve the boredom. In the UK it is common for some employees to play online bingo during work hours.

Some experts say that wasted employee time damages the economy as a whole. One popular online bingo site did a survey and the results were not pleasing to employers. The results are sure to raise the ire of bosses throughout the UK. The survey showed that 55% of those surveyed played online bingo on their iphones while at work. The iphone is one of the most popular mobile devices and give employees the ability to play bingo and other casino games at work without using the company’s computer system. Many employers have software in place to prevent unauthorized surfing in the workplace.

A majority of the survey’s respondents said that they spent about an hour every week playing games when they should have been working. For corporations with thousands of employees the wasted time quickly adds up and affects the company’s overall performance. It has been estimated that if every worker in the UK engaged in similar behavior that 57 million work hours are lost every year. For employers this would be a massive drain on resources and could cost corporations millions, if not billions, in wasted resources. Even worse, the wasted time could easily adversely affect the nation’s economy and greatly lower productivity.

Online bingo players are not solely to blame for this workplace phenomenon. Today there are hundreds of websites and mobile applications that enable workers to play online bingo and other casino games. A majority of workers do their job as expected but some succumb to temptation. Online bingo can provide players with hours of fun, excitement and socialization but it has no place in the workplace.

Some Express Concerns About Facebook’s Online Gambling Plans

Some Express Concerns About Facebook’s Online Gambling Plans

Many in the online gaming world were excited by the recent announcement by social networking giant Facebook that it will provide real time gambling apps for online players. Since Facebook has over 800 million active users the potential can easily be seen. Currently Facebook offers a virtual currency known as Facebook Credits and reports say that Facebook is interested in supporting the exchange of real currencies. Facebook would like to open the Facebook Platform to online gambling. Some say that Facebook may make the move as early as the first quarter of 2012. Facebook wants to hand out eight licenses to online gaming operators in legal regulated markets such as the UK. Since the UK is the world’s largest online bingo market one of the licenses is sure to go to an online bingo operator.

Not everyone is pleased with the move by Facebook to facilitate online gambling. Facebook is now being accused of luring minors into gambling through the new gambling apps. Facebook plans to let UK punters try their luck at bingo, poker, roulette and fruit machines. (slots) Facebook already allows members to play online bingo and slot machines using virtual currencies. Critics fear that that the implementation of gambling will create a new generation that believes gambling is safe and fun. Dr Robert Lefever, founding director of the Promis Recovery Centre stated “Introducing gambling to Facebook is a cynical way for the gambling industry to find new markets, making gambling look acceptable. There will be young people who think these games have Facebook approval, that you can gamble and it’s fun. It’s not – gambling destroys families.”

Labour Member of Parliament Louise Ellman told reporters from the Daily Mail “I’m very concerned about this move by Facebook and the impact it might have on children and other vulnerable people. Children spend hours on Facebook and parents need to be confident that it is a safe environment. Religious groups weighed in on the issue. Lauri Moyle, of Christian Action Research Education (CARE) stated “Because there is a link between the age when people start gambling and the likelihood of developing a difficulty controlling their gambling, protecting children from the normalisation of gambling is vital.” Professor Mark Griffiths, of Nottingham Trent University worries that young people will learn the intricacies of gambling on Facebook. Griffiths stated “Even when no money changes hands, young children are learning the mechanics of gambling. These games can be a gateway to more serious gambling.”

Despite the objections Facebook plans to offer online bingo and other gambling applications in the UK. The truth is that most people can play online games without developing any problems. Most people gamble online as a pleasant diversion from everyday life.

Arizona Woman Runs Drugs to Fund Bingo Habit

Arizona Woman Runs Drugs to Fund Bingo Habit

Although criminality is not commonly associated with bingo there have been some isolated cases of bingo fanatics stealing large amounts of money to fund their bingo habits. In the UK one woman stole thousands to feed her online bingo habit and another woman stole from relatives to finance her bingo addiction. Both of these cases received widespread publicity in the British press and on many online bingo blogs and forums. In Arizona a 62 year old grandmother found a highly unique way to fund her bingo habit; selling marijuana.

Leticia Villareal-Garcia was arrested while transporting 200 pounds of cannabis from her Douglas Arizona home to a casino in Leticia Villareal-Garcia. Acting on a tip police stopped Ms. Villareal-Garcia’s and noticed a strong smell of fresh cut pot. Law enforcement officials said they found 214 pounds of marijuana in her trunk. Villareal-Garcia insisted that she had no knowledge of the pot in her trunk. Police did not believe her claim and arrested her.

At her trial at in Cochise County Superior Court Villareal-Garcia said that the day before her arrest her son’s long-lost godfather had visited her and borrowed her car. Her lawyer, Robert Zohlmann, said that Villareal-Garcia had been a ‘blind drug mule’ and had been tricked unwittingly into transporting the pot. During the trial prosecutor Doyle Johnstun built his case on circumstantial evidence such as the fact that Villareal-Garcia was driving with her car windows down in chilly winter weather.

A string of character witnesses for Villareal-Garcia testified that she played bingo almost every night. When Villareal-Garcia said her only income was from her bingo winnings and a $275 monthly welfare check she received for caring for her granddaughter prosecutor Johnstun thought he had a motive for the drug running. Johnstun told the jurors that most people who play bingo almost every night of the week end up losing in the long run. Johnstun told the court “The underlying issue is that she’s got a bingo problem, which explains why an otherwise nice person might get sucked into something like this.”

The jury deliberated for less than two hours and found Villareal-Garcia guilty. At sentencing Villareal-Garcia maintained her innocence and said “I never, never had any knowledge of that car being loaded when I went to Tucson.” The judge sentenced Villareal-Garcia to three years in prison and fined her $150,000. If she had played online bingo none of this would have happened!

It’s Official-Bingo is Good For You

There is overwhelming evidence that playing bingo has many benefits particularly for the elderly. Earlier in the year a study done by the National Health Service in the UK showed that playing bingo and engaging in other social activities can significantly shorten hospital stays.  Another study showed that playing bingo can delay the onset of Alzheimer’s symptoms. Most of the research has been done in the UK because of the deep attachment UK residents have for bingo. In fact the United Kingdom is now the world’s largest bingo market.

New research done in the United States indicated that playing bingo can prevent certain forms of disability among seniors. In addition to playing bingo other social activities are important. The research was done at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and involved 1,000 subjects. Attending church, going out to a restaurant with friends, doing volunteer work and taking trips have also been shown to delay or prevent certain disabilities associated with old age. All of these activities help seniors to be mentally and physically fit well into old age. The study done in the Unites States focused on participants in their eighties. Basic activities studies included feeding, bathing and dressing and physical activities such as walking up a flight of stairs, walking a half mile and doing household chores. The study concluded that seniors that engaged in social activities such as bingo were twice as likely to remain independent and mobile. A statement from the study says “Results showed that a person who reported a high level of social activity was about twice as likely to remain free of a disability involving activities of daily living than a person with a low level of social activity.”

Today more seniors are learning basic computer skills. Many seniors have discovered the joys of online bingo. In the UK Mecca bingo halls hosted sessions to teach people basic computer skills. The sessions were part of a nationwide initiative to promote computer literacy in the UK. Of course it was in Mecca’s best interests to host the programs because Mecca operates one of the most well known online bingo sites in the UK.

Playing bingo has been shown to promote hand eye coordination. Players must mark cards quickly building hand eye coordination. Bingo requires a certain level of concentration and provides players with plenty of mental exercise. One important study done in the UK showed that the mental and intellectual stimulation provided by bingo games can keep the mind sharp well into old age. In the UK there are several centenarians who still play regular bingo games.
